I want to say that the first time I heard Big Caption was in ’08 at Jackalope Lounj. I don’t remember much from this night, not due to drunkenness, but because it was so long ago. I flagged DJ Madhatter down to ask him who was on stage and all he could give me was a name. Upon further investigation, nobody could answer my question as to who this guy was, beyond his name.
Well, fast forward a couple of years and now once again I have come across Caption. This time it’s not out at a bar, but rather through his online pushing of his new mixtape The 12 Step Program.
The mixtape is going to be released this Friday night at BBC (doors at 10pm), which is a nice little venue above a bar that I really enjoy. There will be a few performances and I believe that DJ Tyme is spinning.
Caption is a talented rapper. You can’t deny that he can rhyme and knows how to flow. What’s more engaging to me is that his lyrics aren’t empty or vastly lacking substance. I’m not calling him a conscious rapper by any means, but there’s more to his writing than the typical trappings found within Hip-Hop today.
To put it plainly, I’m impressed.
The downside to the mixtape is that it’s a mixtape. That’s not a knock to anybody. If you don’t know how I feel about mixtapes, I ask you to listen to my song “Mixtape Epidemic”. But, personal feelings aside about the mixtape culture, Big Caption has got something going.
I hope his next step is an official album. I think the quality of his ability warrants the undertaking of a proper album after this mixtape is released.
